IAVI Commemorates the Life of Dr. Ciro de Quadros, Former Board Member and Public Health Expert
Dr. Ciro de Quadros, a champion of public health and disease prevention who served on the IAVI Board of Directors from 2001 to 2007, passed away on 28 May at the age of 74.
A native of Brazil, Dr. de Quadros was an active advocate for increased access to life-saving vaccines in the developing world and a longtime champion of human rights. His work with the Brazilian public health service, the World Health Organization, the Pan American Health Organization and other leading public health groups led to significant advances combating smallpox, polio, measles and several other challenging infectious diseases. At the time of his death, Dr. de Quadros served as Executive Vice President of the Sabin Vaccine Institute, where for more than a decade he led advocacy efforts promoting sustained financing for vaccine programs in low- and middle-income countries.
“As a member of the IAVI Board and our Policy Advisory Committee, Dr. de Quadros was instrumental in shaping a supportive environment for AIDS vaccines and HIV prevention,” observed IAVI President and CEO Margie McGlynn. “By remaining steadfast in our quest for a vaccine to end AIDS, we honor Dr. de Quadros’s unwavering commitment to public health.”
