IAVI at HIVR4P 2024, the 5th HIV Research for Prevention Conference

From HIV vaccine development to socio-behavioral research and community engagement in clinical trials, IAVI leaders are presenting on a range of pressing topics in HIV prevention research.

After attending the AIDS 2024 conference in July, IAVI is excited to have the opportunity to join the other major HIV conference this year: the 2024 HIV Research for Prevention Conference (HIVR4P) in Lima, Peru, from October 6-10. IAVI leaders will share their expertise and engage with global experts across five packed days of satellite sessions, symposia, oral abstracts, and posters. Some highlights of our participation in HIVR4P include:

One symposium featuring IAVI.

  • Vincent Muturi-Kioi, IAVI’s HIV vaccine product development team lead, will discuss mRNA technology for HIV vaccines: Hopes and challenges during a symposium entitled Novel approaches and platforms: Vaccines and immunotherapies. The symposium will be moderated by Asociación Civil Impacta Salud y Educación’s Javier Lama and South African Medical Research Council’s Glenda Gray. — October 10 at 10:30 PET

IAVI’s participation across multiple satellites, including three IAVI-hosted sessions.  

  • A compelling armour in the diverse toolbox: The promise of broadly neutralizing antibodies as HIV prevention options in times of globally evolving viral variants will feature Vincent Muturi-Kioi, IAVI’s HIV vaccine product development team lead. This session is organized by an IAVI partner, BRIC-Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI). — October 6 at 10:30 PET

  • The Continued Relevance of HIV Vaccines in the Age of Long-Acting Antiretrovirals: Insights from India and Sub-Saharan Africa will feature IAVI’s Saif ul Hadi, director, access, India. This session is organized by YR Gaitonde Center for AIDS Research and Education (YRGCARE). — October 6 at 10:30 PET

  • Understanding the role and power of advocates and researchers in advancing Discovery Medicine Vaccine Trials (DMVTs) and the development of Broadly Neutralizing Antibodies (bnAbs) for HIV Prevention will be chaired by IAVI’s George Owino, senior manager, policy and advocacy, with moderation from IAVI’s Saif ul Hadi, director, access, India. This is an IAVI-hosted session supported by the Coalition to Accelerate and Support Prevention Research (CASPR). — October 6 at 16:30 PET

  • Leveraging SBR to Engage and Empower communities in HIV Prevention Research will be moderated by IAVI’s Yvonne Wangui Machira, director, socio-behavioral research, with remarks from IAVI’s Saif ul Hadi, director, access, India; IAVI’s Anja Van der Westhuizen, manager, community engagement; and IAVI’s Ken Ondeng’e, manager, socio-behavioral research. This is an IAVI-hosted session. — October 7 at 9:00 PET

  • Pathways for meaningful and early partnership with communities to build awareness and readiness for clinical trials, and potential future introduction of HIV bnAbs for infant prophylaxis will be moderated by IAVI’s Anja Van der Westhuizen, manager, community engagement, with remarks from IAVI’s Ken Ondeng’e, manager, socio-behavioral research, and an IAVI Community Working Group member. Three oral abstracts by IAVI.

  • Romy Rouzeau, a research scientist at IAVI’s Neutralizing Antibody Center, will present In vivo protection by a combination of engineered bnAbs against repeated high-dose mixed-SHIV challenges. This will take place during the session Monoclonals for prevention. — October 8 at 15:30 PET

  • Kashma Goyal, IAVI India, will present Science simplified – co-creating games with key communities to communicate HIV germline targeting vaccine design concepts in India and South Africa. This will take place during the session Driving PrEP implementation through community engaged science. — October 10 at 13:00 PET

  • Anja Van der Westhuizen, manager, community engagement, will present Lessons learned from engaging community stakeholders in product development for a proposed novel HIV intervention in early-phase clinical development.
