What we do
IAVI is a nonprofit scientific research organization with offices and labs in Africa, India, Europe, and the U.S. We are scientists, researchers, advocates, activists, administrators, and innovators. We are experts in vaccine and antibody discovery, development, and clinical research.
IAVI was founded in 1996 with a mission to develop a safe, affordable, globally accessible HIV vaccine. We are still dedicated to fulfilling our original mission. While we continue to work toward an HIV vaccine, we are also applying our capabilities, expertise, and partnerships toward:
- Other HIV prevention methods: existing tools are effective but not globally accessible.
- Tuberculosis vaccines: one vaccine exists but its use is limited.
- Emerging infectious diseases vaccines: many emerging infectious diseases lack vaccines to prevent them; for those that exist, access and widespread availability during outbreaks are limited.
HIV, tuberculosis, and emerging infectious diseases are all marked by their persistence — even with some available vaccines and treatments — and exact a heavy personal toll, including financially. People living in poverty experience a disproportionate burden of that toll.
