XVII International AIDS Conference

The XVII International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2008) will be held in Mexico City, Mexico from 3-8 August 2008. AIDS 2008 will be the first time a country in Latin America has hosted the Conference, and IAVI will be there to participate in a series of events, as well as to report on the state of AIDS vaccine research and development.

Why the world needs an AIDS vaccine

Despite the international community's best efforts, the HIV pandemic continues unabated. In 2006, more than 39 million people were living with HIV worldwide. Over four million people became newly infected with HIV and an estimated 2.8 million lost their lives to AIDS.

IAVI and Indian Government Announce Results of Phase I AIDS Vaccine Trial
A phase I clinical trial of an MVA-based AIDS vaccine candidate was successfully completed in India, the results of which showed the vaccine candidate had acceptable levels of safety and was well tolerated.
Inovio Expands Research Agreement with IAVI for Use of Novel Vaccine Delivery Technology
As part of an expanded agreement, Inovio Biomedical Corporation will supply IAVI with electroporation delivery devices for use in pre-clinical research on HIV genes and AIDS vaccine candidates. This technology that has the potential to induce significant antibody and T-cell immune responses, both of which scientists believe will be critical to developing a preventive AIDS vaccine.

New Resource Tracking Report Released
A new HIV vaccines and microbicides resource tracking report, released at the International AIDS Conference in Mexico City, indicates a dramatic increase in funding for biomedical HIV prevention research and development, including AIDS vaccines and microbicides, between 2000 and 2006—with only a modest increase in 2007.
